Herpangina or Painful Mouth Ulcers

Mouth ulcers are common during summer. We are seeing a surge of cases in October, this year. They are quite distressing with children who cannot swallow, and may even drool saliva. Herpangina like many viral illnesses, typically starts off with sudden, high fever that may reach 102-103° F. Treat fever on its own merits.
General hygiene measures go a long way in preventing the spread of the disease within the family and to other children.
Do remember to keep your child at home until he is out of the infectivity period. The contagious period is highest during the first week of symptoms and signs. You certainly don’t want other children or adults to suffer as much as your little one.
